At Apex Facility Resources, we believe in celebrating not just the professional accomplishments of our team but also the unique personalities that drive our success. Our Employee Spotlight offers a glimpse into the lives of our exceptional team members, each of whom is dedicated to creating innovative and efficient workplace solutions for our clients.
In this Employee Spotlight, we’re pleased to introduce Alex Scott, Designer / Project Planner. Let's dive into what makes him passionate both in and out of the workplace.
I find myself diving into more design and creativity using digital games, for example, The Sims. The Sims has been an integral part of my design journey as it essentially brought me to where I am today. It allowed me to steer in the direction of Interior design and basically create spaces in real life instead of within a game. But I go back to the Sims and create whatever I can to have the creative juices continue to flow. Besides this, I take the time to hang out with my partner and friends and really grasp onto the moments that bring joy. Sharing laughs while playing boards games, exploring ideas through conversations and making memories whenever we can.
Any chance to go out and do a hike, try out a new restaurant, or drive to the coast for the weekend have also been great escapes to stay passionate outside of work and allow the mind to relax and possibly take in new ideas or ways of thinking.
Finding a design solution that works best for the client and their given space. As a designer, problem solving comes naturally when collaborating and working with the client to solve a challenge that they need solved. Most of the time, it’s thinking outside of the box, and bringing a solution to the table that the client wouldn’t have thought about.
Bringing a design to life. As designers, we strategically think about what the best solution may be, while maintaining a budget-friendly approach. Once a solution is found, then the real magic occurs by bringing the design to life and having the client enjoy the newly designed space, meeting the criteria and their needs.
Keeping a work/life balance has been an ongoing task for me to maintain as it’s crucial to have time to recharge, relax and prepare for the next day. The balance is constantly changing as it’s about setting boundaries and knowing what matters the most to you. When work starts to become a lifestyle, something that you enjoy and take pride in, it may blend into a unique work/life balance. Thankfully, I manage my time effectively to where I’m able to complete the tasks at hand and end my day feeling accomplished. Then, I take the time left in the day to unwind and enjoy my other hobbies, play with my dog and get myself mentally prepared to tackle the next day.
Martyn Lawrence Bullard. He’s known for his eclectic, yet sophisticated interiors where he creates spaces that have a touch of modern and luxury. He has a way of incorporating global influences into his designs that I find intriguing and fascinating. Since I have a love for travelling internationally, I find myself admiring architecture and design work, getting ideas to hopefully incorporate in future design work.
Take a step back, breathe, and reassess. There are some moments when a situation will raise the blood pressure a bit too high due to frustration. This has been a common issue, especially when taking things a bit too personally as I take pride in the work I do. However, not everything is serious within the field of work I do. So, taking a step back to breathe, clearing the mind and rethinking the situation has helped with ensuring that there are no further roadblocks to finding a solution and attaining success.
I would have to say, my favorite restaurant in Seattle is Moto Pizza in West Seattle. There are so many great contenders out there, but I feel Moto Pizza really gives all other pizza locations a run for their money. It’s Detroit-style, deep dish pizza with such unique flavors, toppings and combinations. My favorite is the Mr. Pig that has pork belly, pork sausage, a cheese blend, topped with a lime sauce and a special Mr. Pig sauce. They are a small business but have slowly started opening locations throughout Bellevue, Edmonds and even at T-Mobile Park for the at-home Mariner games. I highly recommend it if you want to enjoy a delicious, deep-dish pizza.
If I’m able to supply a close second, Burnett’s Pub in downtown Renton has the best chicken wings in the PNW. They are crispy, flavorful and offer some unique sauces, like fish sauce. It may sound weird at first, but once you try it, you’ll understand why it’s their most popular option.
It may be a bit frightening, but if I could go to the moon and do a spacewalk, I think that would be the most insane experience. I love to stargaze and admire the night sky, though to see the world and outer space in a whole new perspective would truly be once in a lifetime.
I have a love for travel, especially when travelling internationally. It all started when I was 13 in 8th grade, taking my first trip to the United Kingdom. After that, over the years I have traveled to about 22 different countries across the world. Immersing myself in the culture and history that each location offers while enjoying all the delicious food delicacies. Each trip I took is truly one of a kind and the places I’ve been to will forever be some of my favorite memories.
Another fun fact about me that might surprise some, my parents own 4 Taco Del Mars in Eastern Washington (Ellensburg, Moses Lake, Wenatchee and Ritzville).
I would say a blend between a natural problem solver and Curious/Continuous learner. As a designer, problem solving is a natural trait that comes to us daily since we are constantly working on finding the best solution to meet the needs of the client.
By being a natural problem solver, it allows us, especially myself, to be curious and continuously learn with possible ideas and solutions that may arise. I’m always learning of possible solutions and creative ideas that may have not come to mind originally, or I’m finding myself learning a new program that will make the day-to-day workload / task easier to manage/complete. To ensure I have the best tools and information for the client, I take the time to understand what I have at hand and figure out a way to bring success for myself, the company, and the client.
