5 Ways to Stay Connected Remotely

Even as some companies return to work, many organizations are opting to keep their teams working remotely. While we are all learning to navigate the new normal, it is crucial to remember to maintain your company culture. Here are our tips to stay connected with your team while working remotely:

1. Virtual Happy Hour

A great way to wind down the week is with a cocktail and light conversation, all from the comfort of home. A drop-in environment makes it fun and relaxed for employees to stop by as their still busy schedule permits. If you’re taking a break from alcohol, check out some of our favorite mocktails! Check out some of the drink specials we featured at our 2019 Mugs & Martinis event.

2. Use video conferencing and, yes, turn the camera on!

  • Not all calls are video calls, but they should be encouraged in small group meetings and collaboration settings. Video chats provide the personal touch we’re missing from the old in-office lifestyle. It is well-researched and documented that non-verbal communication is around half of communication. The visual aspect of meetings – dressing the part, appropriate facial expressions, and eye contact are all important to professional communication.
  • Etiquette Note: Make sure to set expectations about video calls in advance – don’t spring them on your unsuspecting teammates

3. Create a “water cooler”

  • A drop-in video hangout or chat channel to share fun stories and pictures is a great way to give your team an outlet to stay in touch more consistently.

4. Team book club

  • Continue learning together and engaging outside of direct roles and responsibilities. Set a reading schedule and meet consistently to check-in and discuss. Here are some books our team has read together recently:
      1. Conversational Capacity: The Secret to Building Successful Teams That Perform When the Pressure is on – Craig Webber
      2. Leadership is an Art – Max DePree
      3. The Obstacle is the Way: The Timeless Art of Turning Trials into Triumph – Ryan Holiday
      4. Customer Satisfaction is Worthless, Customer Loyalty is Priceless – Jeffrey Gitomer

5. Employee spotlights

  • Utilize social media and let others get to know your team by highlighting individuals in employee spotlights or employee of the month programs. Check out some of ours!
